When a customer asks ChatGPT for a plumber in your town, are you one of the names?

A growing share of customers no longer type "electrician Reading" into Google and scroll. They ask an assistant and get an answer: a short list of businesses, with reasons. If you are not on it, you do not come second. You are not in the conversation.

What has changed

Search used to hand the customer a page of links and let them choose. An assistant does the choosing. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Mode for the best roofer in Wokingham and you get something like ten names, each with a line on why, and a nudge towards two or three of them. The customer rings one of those. The thirty other roofers in Wokingham were never shown.

The assistant is not reading your website and judging the design. It is reconciling what it can find about you across the places it trusts — your Google Business Profile, review sites, directories, your own pages — and repeating whatever it is confident about. Four things decide most of it:

  • Reviews, and how many.

A business with ninety reviews on its Google profile is a safer thing for an assistant to repeat than one with twelve. Volume and recency both count.

  • A complete Google Business Profile.

Category set, hours filled in, area served, photos, a phone number that matches everywhere else. Gaps here read as uncertainty.

  • The same name, address and phone everywhere.

Your site, your Google profile, Checkatrade, Facebook, Companies House. When they disagree, a less confident assistant names someone else.

  • A website that says plainly what you do and where.

Not a slogan — a sentence. "Gas Safe boiler repairs in Reading and Wokingham" is something an assistant can quote. Structured data underneath it removes the guesswork.

None of this is a trick, and none of it is guaranteed. Your website is one input, and often not the decisive one, which is why we do not sell "AI SEO" for a website. We measure what the assistant actually says, and tell you what is missing. The longer version is in our guide, Will AI assistants recommend my business?

Free, today

Ask the assistant what your customers ask

Give us your business name, your trade and your town. We put the questions a customer would put to ChatGPT — "who is the best plumber in Reading?", "emergency plumber near Wokingham" — and show you, question by question, whether it named you and who it named instead. Takes a minute or two. No email, no sign-up, nothing to buy.

Each question is asked once, so it is a reading rather than a verdict: the same question can get a different answer tomorrow. That is exactly why the full audit asks every question several times.

The full audit, and a monthly monitor

The free check is one ask per question. The audit we are building is the version that survives you checking it yourself:

  • We ask. Eight to twelve questions built from your trade, your town and the towns next door, each put to the assistant several times, plus what it says when asked about you by name.
  • We record and show you. Every business it named, in order, with the answers quoted word for word. Named in 0 of 3 asks is a fact you can check; a score is not.
  • We say what is missing. Against the things known to matter: reviews, profile completeness, consistent details across your listings, structured data on your site. Each item marked ours to fix or yours.
  • We ask again monthly. Same questions, same method, one-page email: who got named this month, and what changed since last. A month where nothing moved says so.

Neither is on sale yet and nothing here is priced. Registering interest costs nothing and commits you to nothing. It tells us whose audit to run first.

Straight answers

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No, and nobody honestly can. There is no index to pay into and no position to climb. The same question gets a different answer depending on how it is phrased, which session asked it and which week it is. What we can do is ask the questions your customers ask, show you what came back, and tell you what is missing against the things known to matter.
Is this the same as SEO?
It overlaps heavily — clear, corroborated, well-structured information helps both. The difference is what winning looks like. Search gives the customer ten links to choose from; an assistant gives them a short list of names and a recommendation. Being eleventh on Google is a position. Being a business the assistant did not mention is not.
What does the free check actually do?
It asks ChatGPT a handful of the questions a customer in your town would ask — "who is the best plumber in Reading", "emergency electrician near Wokingham" — once each, and shows you whether you were named and who was. Each question is asked once, so treat it as a reading rather than a verdict.
What will the full audit and monitor cost?
They are not on sale yet, so there is no price to quote. Registering interest costs nothing and commits you to nothing; it tells us the order to run the first audits in, and you will hear from us before anyone else does.
