Painters and decorators · Slough and the Thames Valley

Most of the work happens before the paint does.

Anyone can put two coats on a wall. What separates a decorating job that still looks right in eight years from one that does not is the preparation underneath it — and that is where we spend our time.

What we do

Six kinds of work, one standard

Interior decorating

Whole houses and single rooms. Walls, woodwork and ceilings, prepared properly and cut in by hand.

Exterior painting

Render, masonry, soffits and joinery. Spring to autumn, weather permitting and never rushed.

Period and heritage work

Sash windows, cornice, panelling and lime-friendly finishes on older properties across the Thames Valley.

Wallpapering

Lining, hanging and pattern matching, including hand-printed and delicate papers.

Spray finishing

Kitchens, wardrobes and doors sprayed in situ for a finish a brush cannot reach.

Commercial and lettings

Offices, communal areas and void-period turnarounds, worked around your tenants and hours.

Preparation

What you are actually paying for

A cheaper quote is almost always a quote with less of this in it. It is invisible on the day and obvious in three years, which is why it is worth setting out in full.

  1. Protect

Floors sheeted, furniture moved and covered, fixtures removed rather than cut around. Before a tin is opened.

  2. Make good

Fill, caulk, sand, and sand again. Almost all the time on a Ridgeway job is spent on surfaces nobody will ever see.

  3. Prime

The right primer for the substrate — bare plaster, stained ceiling, bare wood, previously glossed. Not one tin for everything.

  4. Finish

Two coats minimum, cut in by hand, in the light of the room rather than the light of a workshop.

  5. Leave it right

Everything back where it was, edges checked with you in daylight, and the leftover paint labelled by room.

Quotations

What a Ridgeway quote looks like

We come and look, in daylight, and we take as long as it takes. The quote arrives in writing within two working days and itemises the preparation separately from the painting, so you can see exactly what you are buying and compare it honestly with anybody else's.

If a room needs less than you were expecting, we will say so. We have talked more than one customer out of a full redecoration and into a single wall, and they have all come back.

"If we would not have it in our own house, it does not leave with our name on it."

— Alan Ridgeway, who started the firm in 1994

Reviews

What our customers say

★★★★★

Four days of preparation before any paint appeared, which I confess I questioned at the time. The walls are glass. I understand now what we were paying for.

They repainted the whole house around us with two small children in it and I cannot find a single mark on a carpet or a light switch.

★★★★★

Sash windows on a Victorian terrace that three other decorators had quoted to simply paint over. Ridgeway stripped and repaired them first. Worth every penny.

Where we work

Slough and the villages around it

Two teams, both local. We do not take work we cannot get to easily, because a decorating job that is finished in the evenings is a decorating job done badly.
